Job Description

Our operations in Lydenburg require a proactive and diligent X12 Assistant General Worker to join the team on a fixed-term contract. This position is fundamental to site efficiency, providing direct hands-on support to ensure smooth daily functions and strict adherence to safety and procedural standards. The role demands a practical, reliable individual who takes pride in contributing to team objectives and maintaining the highest levels of workplace order and safety. The successful candidate will be engaged in a variety of tasks that form the backbone of operational support, offering valuable experience in a dynamic environment.

Key Responsibilities

The core of this role involves being an active and supportive presence on site. You will be expected to collaborate closely with established site teams, providing the necessary assistance to help meet and achieve daily operational targets and key performance indicators. A significant part of your daily routine will involve assisting with structured inspections of your designated area of responsibility. This requires a vigilant eye to identify and report any deviations from standard practice, potential safety hazards, or maintenance issues before they escalate. You will be encouraged to participate in basic problem-solving for routine operational challenges, with a clear understanding of when to escalate more complex deviations to supervisors or specialist teams.

Furthermore, your duties will be adaptable to the needs of the operation. You must be prepared to assist with any general site activities as directed, which may include material handling, basic tool management, or supporting specific projects. A consistent commitment to housekeeping is non-negotiable; you will be responsible for performing basic cleaning and organizational duties in your work areas to promote a clean, safe, and efficient environment for all personnel. Every task you undertake must be executed in accordance with documented Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) to ensure consistency and quality. Above all, unwavering compliance with all safety rules, regulations, and company procedures is the absolute priority in every action you take.

Qualifications & Experience

Applicants must possess a Grade 12 certificate or an equivalent recognized qualification as a minimum requirement. This foundational education is essential for understanding procedural documentation and safety protocols. Furthermore, candidates must demonstrate a minimum of one year of relevant practical experience in a similar environment, such as general work, site assistance, labour support, or within an industrial, manufacturing, or mining context. This prior experience should evidence an understanding of a structured work environment and basic site operations.

Required Skills & Abilities

Technical skills are secondary to core behavioral competencies in this role. You must possess good verbal and written communication skills to interact effectively with team members and report issues accurately. Being a strong team player is crucial, as the role is built on collaboration and mutual support within the site team. Excellent listening skills are necessary to follow instructions precisely and understand task requirements. A keen attention to detail will enable you to spot irregularities during inspections and maintain high standards in all duties. An inherent willingness to learn and adapt to new tasks or procedures is highly valued. Most critically, you must possess a deeply ingrained safety consciousness, where personal and team safety is the foremost consideration in every activity.

General Requirements

All candidates must be aware that an offer of employment is contingent upon successfully passing the company’s and/or client’s formal criminal history screening processes. The operational nature of the site requires flexibility; therefore, you may be expected to work rotating shifts and, from time to time, be required to work reasonable overtime to meet operational demands. You must be in good physical, mental, and medical fitness to perform the duties of a general worker, which can include standing for extended periods, lifting moderate weights, and working in an industrial site environment. Proof of fitness may be requested.
