Job Overview

Fedics, part of Tsebo Solutions Group, is looking to build a talent pool of suitable candidates for Ward Hostess opportunities in Johannesburg. This role is ideal for a professional, service-oriented individual who enjoys working with people and can provide a high standard of hospitality within a healthcare environment.

As a Ward Hostess, you will work directly on patient wards and play an important role in ensuring that patients receive their meals, beverages and refreshments in a safe, timely and courteous manner. The position requires someone who understands the importance of patient dignity, hygiene, attention to detail and excellent customer service.

The successful candidate will operate in a busy healthcare environment where meals need to be delivered accurately and according to individual patient requirements. You will also work closely with kitchen and catering teams to ensure that dietary information, special requests and meal changes are communicated correctly.

Key Responsibilities

Your responsibilities will include providing professional meal and beverage service to patients throughout the designated meal periods. You will ensure that patients have access to fresh drinking water and that beverage stations are properly maintained.

The Ward Hostess will assist patients with selecting meals and ensure that menu information is recorded correctly, taking into consideration individual preferences, dietary requirements and restrictions. Completed menu information must be submitted to the kitchen within the required deadlines.

You will also be responsible for keeping patient diet information current and communicating any changes or special dietary requests to the appropriate kitchen personnel.

An important part of the role involves preparing and transporting food trolleys between the kitchen and patient wards. Meals must reach patients on time, and trays should be checked beforehand to ensure that the correct meals, beverages, cutlery and other required items are included.

The successful candidate will serve meals according to established hospital procedures while maintaining a respectful and patient-focused approach. After meal services, trays and used service items must be collected promptly, while ward service areas are kept clean and orderly.

You will also help control and maintain crockery, cutlery and other catering equipment. Equipment must be handled, cleaned and sanitised according to applicable food safety and hygiene requirements.

Maintaining a high standard of cleanliness is essential. The Ward Hostess must ensure that ward kitchens and service areas remain hygienic and organised while following food safety, infection-control, occupational health and safety procedures.

You will be expected to wear the required uniform and PPE correctly and maintain a professional appearance throughout your working hours.

Skills and Competencies

Fedics is looking for candidates who demonstrate:

  • Strong customer service and patient-care skills.
  • Clear verbal and written communication.
  • A professional and courteous manner.
  • Good attention to detail.
  • The ability to work independently with limited supervision.
  • Strong organisational and time-management abilities.
  • The ability to remain calm and effective in a busy environment.
  • A good understanding of hygiene and food safety practices.
  • The ability to follow workplace procedures and instructions accurately.
  • Reliability, responsibility and a positive attitude.
  • The ability to work effectively as part of a team.
  • Flexibility to work shifts, weekends and public holidays when required.
  • The physical ability to stand, walk and move meal trolleys during shifts.

Minimum Requirements

Matric is required.

Previous experience working in a hospital or healthcare environment will be an advantage. Candidates with experience in hospitality, catering, food service or customer-facing environments may also find the role particularly relevant, provided they can meet the requirements of the position.

Why This Role Matters

A Ward Hostess contributes directly to the overall patient experience. Meals are an important part of patient care, and the manner in which they are delivered can make a meaningful difference to a patient’s comfort and wellbeing.

The successful candidate must therefore understand that this is more than a conventional food-service position. It requires compassion, professionalism, patience and respect for people who may be receiving medical treatment.
