Why This Role Matters
As a Bus Driver with Unitrans, you are the face of our company to our passengers. Your primary contribution is ensuring the safe arrival of passengers through defensive and preventive driving techniques. You will be responsible for controlling the environment of the vehicle (lighting, heating, ventilation) and strictly obeying traffic laws to avoid infractions. Your role is critical in maintaining our reputation for reliability in the North West region.
Minimum Requirements
To be considered for this role, applicants must meet the following strict criteria:
· Education: Grade 12 / National Certificate.
· Licenses:
· Valid Driver’s License (Code: CE – G, CE – PG, and C – G).
· Public Services Driving License (PG) – This is mandatory.
· Valid PrDP (Professional Driving Permit).
· Experience: Minimum of 5 years of proven experience in the same or a similar position (passenger transport).
Duties & Responsibilities
Successful candidates will be expected to perform the following key tasks:
Safety & Compliance
· Strictly adhere to traffic laws and the customer’s Safety Management System (SMS) policies.
· Conduct pre-trip inspections of the bus, recording any deviations, defects, or malfunctions on the checklist and reporting them to the supervisor immediately.
· Practice defensive driving to avoid involvement in incidents and accidents.
· Mandatory use of seat belts for the driver and all occupants.
· Ensure the vehicle is immobilized correctly: remove keys from the ignition after parking and block the wheels with two chocks.
· Report all near misses, incidents, accidents, and property damage using the correct channels (Supervisor and Line 84/822030).
· Participate in DSS (Driver Safety Sessions) with Supervisors and HST at Unitrans parks and Vulcan Site.
Operational Excellence
· Drive passengers on scheduled services over established routes.
· Do not deviate from the authorized route unless instructed by a superior.
· Comply strictly with collection times described on the Job card.
· Ensure passenger registration on the trip is accurate.
· Maintain the vehicle’s condition by ensuring it is refueled and kept clean at all times.
· Complete log books accurately, recording updated hours and activities.
· No overtaking maneuvers between Unitrans vehicles unless the vehicle ahead has mechanical problems and authorization is granted.
Professional Conduct
· Maintain a positive attitude towards customers at all times.
· Read, understand, and accept the Unitrans Code of Conduct and the Driver’s Manual.
· Control of the ignition key is the driver’s responsibility while in their possession.
· No stops are permitted after unloading passengers at the end of the journey.
· Participate in required job-specific training sessions.
What We Look For
The ideal candidate is a master of defensive driving and preventive techniques. You must possess the discipline to drive with a valid license and RAC2 card at all times, respecting signage and speed limits. Your contribution ensures that this commercial contract (non-subsidized by government) operates efficiently and safely.
