Key Responsibilities
Security Operations
- Conduct routine patrols across campus premises to safeguard property, infrastructure, and individuals.
- Enforce access control procedures and ensure that all persons on site comply with institutional security policies.
- Monitor for suspicious activities, potential threats, or safety hazards and respond promptly.
- Handle emergency situations, including incidents requiring immediate intervention, and escalate when necessary.
- Secure and preserve incident or crime scenes in accordance with training until senior personnel arrive.
- Complete all required reports and documentation accurately and within stipulated timelines.
- Operate security systems and equipment effectively, ensuring proper usage and reporting faults where identified.
- Carry out preliminary investigations into incidents as directed.
Access Control Duties
- Verify identification, permits, and authorisation documents for staff, students, visitors, and contractors.
- Inspect vehicles, bags, and other items in line with standard operating procedures.
- Manage entry and exit points, including locking and securing gates and facilities after hours.
- Monitor the movement of assets and ensure that all removals are authorised and properly documented.
Customer Service and Public Interaction
- Provide a professional and courteous security presence at all times.
- Assist students, staff, and visitors with queries and directions where necessary.
- Support the coordination of events, including open days, public gatherings, and other campus activities.
- Maintain a presentable appearance and uphold a positive image of the institution.
Health and Safety Compliance
- Act as a first responder in emergencies such as fire outbreaks or medical incidents.
- Use personal protective equipment correctly and maintain it in good condition.
- Report safety risks and ensure compliance with health and safety regulations.
Administrative Duties
- Maintain accurate records of incidents, lost and found items, and daily activities.
- Manage key control systems and ensure proper issuing and return procedures.
- Keep documentation organised and up to date as required by departmental standards.
Professional Development
- Participate in ongoing training programmes to enhance knowledge and skills.
- Follow instructions and guidance from supervisors and management.
Minimum Requirements
- Grade 12 or equivalent qualification (NQF Level 4).
- Valid PSIRA registration at Grade C level.
- At least two years of relevant experience in the security sector.
- Basic computer literacy, including familiarity with Microsoft Office applications.
- A clear criminal record, verified through appropriate screening processes.
- Valid driver’s licence.
- Good physical, mental, and medical fitness aligned with job demands.
Preferred Qualifications and Experience
- Post-matric qualification at NQF Level 5 or higher.
- Experience in a university, college, or corporate campus security environment.
- Knowledge of electronic access control systems and CCTV monitoring.
- Higher PSIRA grades or specialised certifications such as Armed Response or Event Security.
- Valid Professional Driving Permit (PDP).
- Firearm competency certification where applicable.
- Training in first aid and firefighting.
